  • I'm Moving

I have been blogging here on Xanga since 2004.  I started as a daily journal, but ended up just blogging about things as the Lord would lead.  Times have changed and technology has changed.  I have bought my own domain and will use it as a place to share information,  links, photos, and blog entries.  I've started the slow process of importing all of my old Xanga posts into the new blog.

  • Storms, Terriorism 9/11, and more

In the last few weeks we have had an earthquake, a hurricane, tornadoes, and more roll through our area.  We are also coming up on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 an event that woke the U.S. up to what was happening all over the world.  There are talks of more terrorist actives to come.  People around me are dealing with sickness, cancer and more.

I can bemoan it all and let despair cripple me.  I can become overactive and try to lose myself in preparing.  I can try to ignore it all and then be overwhelmed.

BUT I don't have to.  I can face it all with strength, wisdom, peace and joy.  You may say, "Well he is full of himself."  I well tell you no.  I can face it because I have no strength, wisdom, peace or joy in myself.  I have them all because I have Jesus Christ.  He alone is my salvation.  He alone is my shelter.  He alone is the rock on which I can stand.  Jesus prayed not the ones He saved would be taken out of the world, but that we would be protected from Satan.  In the midst of trials and tribulations, we can run to Him and stand.  We then can be a light for Christ in the darkness.  When we reminded ourselves of our shelter in Christ, we then can worship Him with abandonment.

I love Sovereign Grace Music (http://www.sovereigngracemusic.org), because they take the Truth of God and put it to music that moves my mind, my will and my emotions to worship God more fully.  I have pasted two songs that are in my heart and mind right now.  They are "I Have A Shelter" and "Behold Our God" so listen and consider Jesus Christ in the midst of your storms.

  • The Last Sin Eater

I’m helping out with a stage play and want to invite you all to come.  It is “The Last Sin Eater” adapted for stage (by one of the cast) from the book by  Francine Rivers.  (Info on the story here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Sin_Eater)  The story deals with many themes including forgiveness. The story revolves around a girl named Cadi who is carrying guilt for her younger sister’s death. The only hope for guilt or shame to be taken care of, according to the tradition of her village, is to die. That’s when the Sin Eater comes, a man who has been chosen by lottery and lives as an outcast and  can never be looked at or touched. He comes whenever he hears the death bell toll and “eats” the sin of the deceased. When Cadi goes to find the Sin Eater and asks if he can eat her sins before she dies, that starts an unraveling of traditions and the dark secrets of the village are revealed. Come and find out what happens when a man of God comes to the village, and the collision that occurs between him and Brogan Kai, the man who rules the people with an iron fist. You may have seen the movie, directed by Michael Landon, Jr., or read the book by Francine Rivers. With permission from Brian Bird, the producer of the film, Act On Ministries will stage this powerful story for the first time.

    Dates: July 8th, 9th, 10th

    Time: 7pm

Location: the Paramount Theater (info and directions here )

Tickets: on the website above or 336-222-8497

  • iWeb, iCloud and the Loss of the Middle Ground

We have lost the middle ground.  In this changing world of web services the middle ground has been lost.  I'm speaking of the loss of iWeb hosting with the conversion of MobileMe to iCloud.  Apple set out to make a suite of software products that would provide users with tools powerful enough and affordable to meet their needs.  The had similar interfaces and talked with each other nicely.  iWeb is a fairly easy to use offline website builder.  But it suffered from poor planning, lack of time and money on upgrades and a changing market.

I started doing websites in the early 90's typing code in a text editor.  Then Microsoft FrontPage came along and gave me powerful tools and easier design, but it had its issues.  After I switched to Mac, I had nothing until iWeb came along.  I enjoy it due to its' ease of use and integration with iPhoto.  However it has drawbacks.  1.  The software designers gave it features that could only be used when hosted by .mac/MobileMe (which is part of the reason I got the service).  The issue is it was not open standards and it seems Apple could not keep a clear line of thought on their web services.  2.  iWeb saves to one file on the hard drive and you better back up multiple places off of your local drive because if you don't you are out of luck.  iWeb publishes to multiple files on the web and you CANNOT import a published site back into iWeb.  That is just poor design! 3.  Poor blogging design.  I use the blog feature to capture photos and text for each day of the mission trips I go on.  But several times iWeb has just totally deleted them with no trace (even using a Time Machine back up).  Since I cannot restore them from the web I've had to have a browser open and iWeb open and rebuild them from scratch.

Then you have the changing market.  It has now become a somewhat polarized market.  You have people who use tumblr to post things that can say around for a little while.  You have basic blogs to share info.  You then have people who want more and make a blog a website with Wordpress.  Then you have the pros who learn the "full featured" editors and make a living by designing for others.  Who suffers?  People like me who want more than a blog, less than learning pro software, and like to design offline and don't want to learn Wordpress.

You see this is an area where Apple has conceded to the changing market rather than innovating and leading the way.  Apple is giving email free to users, syncing content (calendars, contacts, photos, and music), and innovating in great ways.  But they could do more.  They could invest the time to rebuild iWeb for the new age and have it link to other iCloud services.  Prove free hosting up to a certain size limit and then charge reasonable fees for more.  They could make an iPad version of iWeb.  But I fear that Apple does not want to innovate here.  They will just let iWeb fall by the wayside.  Then we who are middle ground users will give up and go the easy route of a blog or be forced to spend time and money we don't have to move to the big leagues.  Sad but true.

Steve and Apple, I'm calling you out!  Quit conseding ground and start inovating.  Let people see they can do more than just blog or just share photos.  Help them have a digital presence and not have to have a computer science degree to do it.  While your at let it integrate with iCloud, Flickr, Twitter and Facebook.  THINK DIFFERENT APPLE!

  • The Power of The Spirit Connecting Lives

In the lives of those of us who have Christ as Lord and Savior, we are connected to each other.  We are connected because we were ransomed from hell and sin because of the death and resurrection of Jesus.  We are connected because we now have one Father.  We are also connected because Jesus sent the Holy Spirit into our lives.  Those connections can be quiet evident even with strangers.  I can look at some one and say he is a believer or she is a believer, before we even talk.  Our relationship with Christ connects us with people all over the world.  Up until a few years ago it was less concrete that this was the case.  But the Internet and Social Media has changes all that.

We can now hear, see and communicate with people all around the world in seconds and with ease.  This is a big change that my generation communicates and it can be challenging to describe to others.  I'll put it in my terms and with my example.  I have people I truly call friends, whom I  have never meet face to face.  But I talk with them weekly and daily via Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, Community Sites, Skype, etc).  It is a blessing to connect with people who have things in common with and can tell you about new things you didn't know about.  It is even more of a blessing when they are a brother or sister in the Lord with you.

One of these friends is Amy Wright.  We met each other via the enjoyment of the TV show LOST at the http://www.gspn.tv/ podcast network.  We talked in groups, calls, and forum posts over the years.  I shared my calling to go on mission trips to Colombia South America with the community.  Amy prayed about it and the Lord led her to support my going through prayer and financial gifts.

I regret that I was not able to get to any of the community meetings that she attended.  Work at school, working play productions, and finances prevented that.  But It was a joy to get to know her.  I and many in the community began to lift her up in prayer as she went into surgery.  We continued to pray when the surgery revealed massive and untreatable cancer.  We lifted her up as she blessed so many.  She shared her situation and was so Christ like.  She had the Lord's peace and continued to encourage so many both near her in Tennessee and across the globe.

Today I learned (via social media) that she has gone home to be with the Lord.  It is a hard time for her friends and family, but a joyous time as well.  We know that she is in no more pain, she is at peace and more than that she is enjoying the direct presence of the Lord. Those of us who know the Lord look forward to the day when we can get to see her again in Heaven.

It is hard to explain to others (in my generation and older generations) about the impact both good and bad this has on me and the community.  But it does not negate it.  I just think it is just God's plan of connecting people in the Gospel.  He used the Roman system of roads and a common language to help spread the Gospel in the past.  Now he is using another tool Social Media to do the same.  It is just a tool and tools can be used correctly or incorrectly.  Social Media does not have to separate us and keep people from direct contact.  It can introduce people and start conversations that can be followed up in person.  We just have to yield the tool to the Lord.  Amy did that and she had a profound impact on people from all over the world.

About Me

  • My user name comes from a verse the Lord is working out in me. "In everything give thanks, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." The title of my page is also from the Lord. He has given me the vision to serve Him as a Chaplain in His Marines/Army. To encourage, pray for, and serve the troops in the midst of war. I'm yielding to Him because only Jesus can do it through me. I love all types of music (that's why I love my iPod I can take it all with me :) ) http://www.google.com/profiles/geoffgentryxforce11
